On Friday, April 24, 2009, my 17 year old daughter attended her senior prom. At least six months prior to her prom, I questioned her about attire. Did she want me to make her a gown or did she prefer to buy one? Well, my daughter is a wishy-washy procrastinator but you have to love her....she's so sweet! In any case, down to the wire one month from the prom, she decides she wants a gown and she wants me to make it. I comply with her wishes by immediately going out and purchasing material that I think will be flattering to her and begin the process of separating pattern pieces, etc.

In case I have not mentioned, I also have a 14 month old daughter who commands my attention 24/7. The deal with my 17 year old, Gabrielle, is that she would have to watch the baby during the evenings while I attempt to sew. That did not always work out so well as the baby did not like not having access to Mommy. Nevertheless, the dress got 99% finished by one-half hour before departure to the prom. It was a harried time as indicated by my disheveled appearance when friends started to arrive at our house to mark and participate in the grand departure.

Gabrielle remarked that she looked "goth". Well, she knew ahead of time what fabrics were selected and what the outfit was to look like. I made her gown, which included a bustier with matching choker and earrings, a petticoat with attached underskirt, and an overskirt made of fine, shiny tulle. I thought she looked beautiful especially after a family friend did her make-up. She received many positive comments about her appearance and I think it finally began to sink in. What do you think? Goth or gorgeous? All opinions welcome.

Hi Mary! Thanks for your inquiry. My gosh, all I can say is that kids these days......it's hard to know for sure what they are saying, doing, or thinking about. Emo is symbolic or even short for emotional. Emo can represent someone who is goth or just someone who might be perceived as different (less than strong or assertive), I suppose.

Emo? What's that? I'm so out of touch!

Thank you to 3gurlz1boy, Anna Marie Hall, and Pattianne for the constructive opinions. I chose the colors for my daughter because she is actually a fan of red and has several red party/formal dresses already. I just thought the wine color was pretty. 3gurlz1boy also made a point that had me thinking that when I was growing up, I too wore a lot of black as a teenager just in general and no one ever put labels on that back then. The kids have labels for everything now. "Goth", "emo", and a whole host of other terms. It amazes me! Thanks again, Ladies!

Yes to both! Goth for the darkness, but a gorgeous creation to go with a gorgeous young lady and her beautiful smile! You've done well on both and should be standing tall with love! Not many these days will create beautiful clothing. Good job!

In my opinion it is a little Goth because of the dark colors. Prom dresses in my opinion are like Easter dresses. They are full of color. That being said that is what "society" thinks. I think she looks beautiful! Great job mommy!
