Stashes, Secrets and Survival

Following in his Mom’s footsteps, my husband keeps an important secret. It is a sweet, enviable and family secret. I have tried often to break the code, to profile the subject (my husband) and the location…but I come up empty handed- literally.

It is not the secret ingredient to a guarded family recipe. It is not the whispered musings of a crazy Uncle from long ago. There is no key for a secret door to a hidden room or mazes. There is no map for a treasure lying in wait.

Nope, the grand mystery at our home is where my husband has hidden his chocolate stash. Now, this mystery has gone on for years! I must say this was frustrating in the beginning.

When I exclaimed, “But we share everything…!”

He replied, “Exactly…and that’s why we are keeping my bachelor couch (currently located in our bonus room-still) and I am keeping my stash of chocolates just for me…”

The teasing and discarded wrappers are often left behind as the stashes have continued. Locations have changed upon discovery and I now understand his motive.

So, he and his Mom were on to something. In the midst of joyful but chaotic and overly scheduled marriage, parenting, work, church, school activities and family events…we all need a little something for ourselves. Long ago, it would have been termed self preservation-now I term it the chocolate stash…and basic survival.

So, what is your chocolate stash? Is it a sport you miss playing? Is it a hobby that is gathering dust in a closet? Is it making time to have a fun dinner without kids with friends? A marathon… or just a quiet morning in a coffee shop with a book?

May you find, protect and cherish your very own chocolate stash…and soon. See more Lisa Jernigan Black at JustAnotherMom.com.
