Where did you grow up? Fayetteville (a true native)
Did you have any siblings? One younger sister, Monica J. Mitchell. We are seven years apart.
Where do you live now? Fayetteville (I have traveled outside of North Carolina, but I am back home.)
Names and ages of your children: One beautiful daughter, Imone' NaSyria, who is 3 years old. The name Imone' is derived from the first letter of my mom's name Iris, the three letters of my sister's name MONica, and the first letter of my name Eshawnna. She is named after the three most beautiful, dedicated, ambitious women in her life.
What are your favorite activities with your kids? My daughter's vivid imagination is our playground. I love playing pretend with her we have been everything from a dinosaur to zebras. We make silly songs and dance to them and other music. "Silly Hat" from Blue's Clues is our favorite song.
What are your least favorite "mom chores"? My daughter's hair is very thick and the washing of her hair on Sunday is very chaotic in our household. A chore that I wish I could do with out.
What kid-free activity do you do in your free time? I am enrolled at Fayetteville Technical Community College to obtain my associate's degree in Business Administration Human Resource Management, so my kid-free activity at this time is STUDYING!!!!
Tell us about your hobbies. I enjoy singing, traveling and reading.
What cartoon character do you have the most in common with, and why? Dora the Explorer. We both love to go on adventures and explore and learn new things.
What three words would your child say bests describe you? Silly. Fun. Love.
What advice do you have for new moms? Protect your child at all times. My daughter is very sociable and friendly. Even though I have discussed with her the dangers of strangers, everyone she meets is not a stranger, but a friend, so I have to be alert at all times. This is sad to say, but they are people out there who look for that friendly child. So some may say I am overprotective, but until she is at the age where her comprehension is better, overprotective I will be.
Do you have a time-saving tip to share with other moms? My time-saving tip: I do my daughter's hair on Sundays and do her hair in small sections and twist and braid them with rubberbands and this allows her hair to stay manageable and I can change the color of her bows throughout the week to match what she wears each day.
Share your favorite 30-minute (or less!) recipe. Our family recipe is chicken stir fry. Ingredients: four or five pieces skinless, boneless chicken breast, one package of frozen California blend vegetables, one package of oriental seasoning. Directions: Brown chicken in a small amount of oil until pinkness is gone. Add package of vegetables with seasoning. You can add soy sauce or teriyaki sauce and put lid on pan and let simmer until vegetables are tender. You can serve with rice or noodles.
Share a funny and memorable moment with your child. I took my daughter to McDonald's and she never was interested in the Playland, but this particular day she was. So we ordered our food and went into the Playland area, we were the only ones in there and my daughter asked if she could play after she finished her food. I said yes and she decided to go on the side that had platforms and it took you higher in the air to the center of the equipment where a tube was. The openings to each of the platforms were small for a child. When she got to the top, she must have became scared because she started to call my name to help her. I was trying to remain calm and get her to go back down the way she came, but she was not understanding. I was just looking at the openings, thinking to myself, "I cannot fit in there." Well, I did climb in there and get her, but it was a whole lot of squeezing going on. After we were free, my daughter looked at me and said, "Oh, Mommy, you saved me. I love you!" Priceless!
What is most challenging at your child's ages?
Getting her to understand the word "NO!" I think she understands, but she is testing me. She gets that from me. Well, at least that is what my mom says. I was her Show Me Baby. What is most rewarding at their ages? Just watching her learn and apply what she has learned. I used to read and sing to her from Day One and now I can see the results of that. She loves reading and singing and still requests "You are my Sunshine" when she goes to sleep.
From your experience, is the label "Terrible Twos" accurate? No. Since my daughter came into my life, every typical story I had heard about motherhood has not been the case with me. She is an exploring individual and at times she does not respond the way I want her to, but she is learning and I have patience.
What do you look forward to most as your child grows? Being that she is my one and only, every day is a different day. Just to see the things that I have taught her and discussed with her come to life. I look forward to her maturing into a beautiful, smart, unique individual who will have a positive impact on society in her lifetime.
How do you and your family celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas? Any funny stories to tell related to past celebrations? My family celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas with each other and normally we go visit the grandparents and in-laws and just fellowship. A funny story with my daughter: When she was 1 year old, she had just begun to walk really good. We were at my paternal grandparents' home and my grandmother keeps oranges and apples and the ribbon holiday candy in bowls throughout the home. Everytime someone would go get an apple from the dish in the formal living room, they would find two teeth imprints in all the apples. My daughter had branded all the apples.
What is a really silly activity you enjoy doing with your kids? Our silly song and dance routine in the mornings.
Have you ever tasted store-bought baby food? Was it any good? Yes, the peaches and custard are good but the vegetables BLAHHH.
What is your favorite children's book (title and author) and why? Well it is not necessary a children's book, "Girls Hold Up This World" by Jada Pinkett Smith. I purchased this book when I was pregnant. My mom, Iris L. Mitchell, has always instilled in my sister and myself that we can do and be anything in this world. She always made us feel special that we were girls. I want to instill the same in my daughter and this book lets her see the many faces of being a young lady and the accomplishments we can achieve.
