My daughter recently informed me that she will be able to take Drivers Education next summer! As soon as she said that I envision her behind the wheel and almost wanted to cry! But you will only be 14 next summer--it's not time yet, I exclaimed. She was quick to supply me with a list of her 14 year old friends who took the class this summer. I envisioned all those "little" girls in their Brownie Uniforms and wondered where the time had gone!
Lucky for me that my daughter is a pretty responsible kid for the most part--unless it has anything to do with cleaning--but what if she turns out to be a crazy driver?? She continued for several weeks to talk about Drivers Ed and asked me a ton of questions and even got her Dad into several discussions about driving. Next thing I know she is actually volunteering to mow the grass, I was almost giddy with excitement that she would suggest doing chores. Then I saw why----she just wanted to "drive" the riding mower. Well I guess we all have to start somewhere!

My son just finished up driver's ed (he'll be 15 this Friday)...he still has to do the "behind the wheel" part (EEK!). One consolation: they have to be at minimum 14 1/2 years old to enroll in driver's education, so if your daughter won't be a full 14 1/2 by the first date of class she'll have to wait a bit longer (good for you...not so much for her!). Also, my son was told that if they take driver's ed and fail the final test, they cannot take driver's ed again and must wait until they're 18 to get their license. Good luck!

Much to my dismay she will be 14 1/2 years old this summer! :( Oh well I guess it's going to happen even if I don't want it to--we can't stop them from growing up I guess! Happy Birthday to your son!!

Yes, Been there... My oldest, now 15, took DE during the summer, funny thing, the first day, they took them out in cars and each did 30 minutes of driving... Well not so funny to me. She NEVER, and I mean NEVER even got behind a wheel of anything except a little electric batteried Barbie car when she was 2 & 3 ... that was over 12 years ago... This system here lets the kids drive the whole first week, then they retreat to the classrooms to do the class teaching. Shockingly, I didn't hear any horror stories of stupid happenings... Imagine that, no accidents. Anyway, whenever we go somewhere, I'll ask if she wants to drive... 95 % of the time, she states that she's good... I can drive, she rather I drive.. ... just waiting for the bombshell when we argue about the car and " I just have to have it" conversation... Oh lord, "just lock me away right now" LOL... but she does very well . Well she better , she has to pave the way for her other sister, who turns 15 next summer... YEAH ME ... I'll have two driving... Did I say Lord , lock me away right now' earlier... ?? I meant to say... just so something to take me out of my misery HA HA HA LOL... Good luck to all of us.

I took DE in this county--I too had never been behind the wheel and was terrifed! I took DE with my best friend and her brother. They had driven old cars and tractors on their grandparents farm. Anyway long story short--I started the car gunned it and the teacher freaked out to say the least. He started yelling, "Press the brakes"! So I slammed on the brakes and we all just about got whiplash! :) Needless to say he didn't let me out of the school parking lot for a long time--and my best friend and I still laugh about it to this day. **just to be sure that my daughter was not faced with this problem--she drove a golf cart & tractor in addition to the lawn mower this summer--I hope it works. Now if I could just find something to calm my nerves I will be good---I feel your misery Denise!

My daughter also informed me that if she was a little older that she could have taken DE this year. Too bad for her she did not make the cut, but next year will be a different story. When I was in school, I didn't take DE and it didn't seem to be that big a deal. But I'm thinking it might be a good idea for Katelin, although she has already been behind the wheel, in parking lots with her dad and up and down my sister's driveway(out in the country). So she has a one up if you will on most, I hope in the long run that is a good thing. But I try to when I'm driving especially since she is getting close to that age to explain things and to point out "stupid mistakes". We have been in a few close calls lately, so I try to point out what they did wrong. Hopefully it will sink in! You never know what they will retain and what they won't until the time comes.
